About The Garden

The Garden is a drop-off club for homeschool students that meets once a week. The name was chosen because of the many times Christ used garden analogies in Scripture. It is a wonderful picture of life as well as the way God works in our lives.

We provide enrichment activities for students and an opportunity for them to work with other kids. Some of these may include history, science, being outdoors, nature, public speaking, experiments, and arts and crafts.

Our goal is to provide a well-rounded approach to learning and provide enrichment opportunities for students.

Statement of Faith

Because we are not a church and may have families with different church backgrounds, our Statement of Faith reflects only the central beliefs of Christianity. If students are interested in more specific doctrine, we encourage them to ask their parents and churches. We do believe in a loving, moral, and just God including His place in the past, present (our current lives), and the future. We want students to know the Creator and the Savior, but just as learning is a student’s responsibility, the relationship between them and God is also theirs. Even though we do not expect students and their families to subscribe to our faith personally, they must support our mission and understand that the students will be taught a Christ-centered worldview.

  • We believe the Bible is the inspired, infallible Word of God. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
  • We believe there is only one God, eternally existent in three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Genesis 1:26; Acts 2:22-23; Hebrews 1:2; Isaiah 9:6-7; Colossians 2:2-3; Colossians 1:13-15, Psalms 2:2-3, Matthew 3:16-17, 2 Corinthians 13:14, Colossians 2:8-9, Colossians 1:15-19)
  • We believe Jesus was fully God and fully man. He died and rose physically for the redemption of all who will believe. (John 1:1-5, 14; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Romans 10:9-10)
  • We believe Jesus is the only Way and Provision for redemption. (John 14:6, Romans 10:9-10)
  • We believe God, the Creator, is a loving and compassionate God who hears prayer, speaks through His Word and the Holy Spirit, and intervenes for His people, both throughout history and still today. (Colossians 1:15-16; Romans 5:8-11, 20-21; Philippians 4:6-7; Colossians 1:12; Ephesians 5:20; Colossians 3:17; 2 Corinthians 1:11; 1 Timothy 2:1-5; 1 Corinthians 3:16)
  • We believe the God of the Bible created the Earth and that humans, who are body, soul, and spirit, are made in His image. (Genesis 1)
  • We believe that our sexual identity as male or female is inscribed in us by God and the marital union of male and female is a fundamental dimension of being made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:26-28; 1 Corinthians 7:2-3)
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 3:5-6; 4:4-6)

Mission Statement

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22:6)

Vision Statement

To  create an environment founded on a biblical worldview, work with students and their families, and provide enrichment lessons and activities.

Values

Biblical Worldview

  • The foundation of this is Christ. We want to imitate Christ in all we do. We are all a work in progress and will seek to show grace to each other as we strive to live as Jesus did (Ephesians 5:1-2).
  • This includes high moral values like respect, responsibility, honesty, love, generosity: things that are pure, noble, and true. (Philippians 4:8).

Family Oriented

  • We believe family is an essential part of a student’s life and education. We want to create an environment where we can work with families and support students on their journey.
  • Family has an important place in a child’s life. We believe in mutual respect between parents and other teachers in a child’s life. It is always good to remember that parents are their child’s first teacher.

Well-Rounded Education

  • Mindset and Variety. It is important to have a growth mindset. We value an organized, yet flexible learning atmosphere by meeting students where they are. Children develop at different paces and may not be at the same level for all subjects. We want to support them where they are. We want to provide a variety of things that will allow students to have different experiences. (Proverbs 1:6-8; Proverbs 2:5-7; Proverbs 2:9-11)
  • We value choice in curriculum used at home. This is not a group that will require families to purchase new/different curriculum. Each family should use the curriculum that works best for them at home. The purpose of this club is not to provide the core academic instruction for students or burden families with a curriculum choice that may not work for them. The goal is to offer enrichment.
  • There are many different homeschool styles: Traditional, Classical, Charlotte Mason, Theme/Unit studies, Unschooling, and Eclectic–the list could go on. Each one of these has its strengths and weaknesses. The more I learn about these styles, the more I believe there is a time and place for each of them. Our goal is to incorporate them as is appropriate for a lesson.
  • Most things in life are not learned from a book. We value learning opportunities that are not from a book that show us how to apply what we are learning to our lives. We value seeing God in the everyday, times of exploration, cooking, gardening, experiments, learning hands-on skills, etc.

Nature/Outside

  • Outside/Fun. A well-rounded education will account for the fact that children need to be outside and that learning needs to be fun. Children (and people in general) need time to move. This will include time in nature, time for unstructured play, and hopefully one day, a school garden. There will be time allotted each meeting, except for extreme inclement weather, for students to be outdoors and play. Students should dress appropriately for even cool and wet weather.

Gratitude

  • Gratitude. Gratitude helps us to be joyful and humble when things are going well. And gratitude allows us to be thankful even when things aren’t ideal. Gratitude is important to practice no matter our circumstances. Even though gratitude goes beyond words, sometimes saying please, thank you, and your welcome, to another person can make all the difference.     (1 Thessalonians 5:17-19)
